A Mother’s Heart

Being Mother’s Day, I have spent some time reflecting, both on what it means to be a mom as well as on what it means to have one. I want to share why having my mom in my life means everything to me.

I have people tell me that I am strong and that my attitude in the midst of tragedy is inspiring. I am appreciative of the compliments, but I must give credit where credit is due.  This resilience was instilled in me from an early age, by my mom. She always demonstrated strength, and encouraged me to be strong and believe in myself. My mom wasn’t one to give a lot of advice, so when she did I knew to listen. My mom didn’t hover; she let me make mistakes and learn from them. I grew up believing that I could do whatever I set my mind to. I still believe that. 🙂

When we lived in Alberta, I looked forward to the day when we would move back to BC, in large part because of my mom. I enjoy spending time with her. Throughout the years she has remained one of my closest friends. I assumed that I would be here to take care of her and my dad as they got older. ALS had other plans. As many of you know, I try to look for the silver lining in not so favourable circumstances, whenever possible. This is an easy one; not only am I grateful for all of the time I now get to spend with my mom, but that we get along and actually enjoy each other’s company.

From the time that I was a small girl, my mom has always been there for me. When the neurologist told me he suspected I had ALS, my mom was on a flight to be with me the next morning. Since that day my mom’s support has not ceased. Monday to Friday, she is here, helping me or my family in some way. Being a retired nurse has definitely come in handy; I do not worry when she is here. Besides assisting me with my care, my mom has taken on the role of personal assistant, making phone calls, setting up appointments and basically ensuring that my household runs smoothly. While I can’t imagine not having her nursing or administrative skills, the greatest role my mom has taken on is that of “Super Grandma”. There is nothing that she wouldn’t do for Silas and Olivia. My mom is there for my kids in the way that I would be if I could. She maintains a sense of normalcy and calm in our lives.

The thing that I probably admire the most about my mom is how she gives and sacrifices so much, and yet never complains, or feels the need to share how much she is doing. I am beyond grateful this Mother’s Day, for my amazing mom and her humble, loving, servant heart. I love you Mom.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom, and to all of the special moms in my life. 🙂

  1. Happy Mother’s Day to you and your mom. You two are such gifts to my world. Both you and your mom as well as your children have all the qualities you mentioned above. So they’ve been passed on- glass half full attitude, resilience and perseverance. I love you all! I’m grateful to have you all be such a big part of our lives. Also a special thanks for always encouraging me as a mom and truly being my sounding board.

She has instilled her strength in you.
I asked her if you were a person of faith, & I am glad that she said yes. You clearly know that Jesus is travelling this difficult journey with you. You will have many prayer warriors, & I am praying for you too.
